no he was not a racist bigot read the independent newspaper review
http://news.independent.co.uk/people/
obituaries/article2675770.ece --
he was one of a kind and the last one,
didn't particularly think his act was that funny but a smack in the eye for the pc lot
he was not a racist bigot ? Im stunned by that remark.
I think its entirely appropraite that as racism dies so did the most racist comedian.
I found it scary watching his programme this week that people still roar with laughter at his racist filth. That speaks volumes about our society and proves we still have a lot of attitudes to change.

I have had enough of the PC rubbish and racism. I say what I like when I like mate. dont care what anyone thinks. Im not a racist nor a bigot, but disagree with this society becomming so restricted.

FREEDOM!!!!
Why do people equate bigotry and intolerance with fighting some kind of freedom crusade? There is such a thing as a happy medium, you know. Manning wasn't it.
did we have racism back when bernard manning was in the ime light?
It was comedy ffs...If he was such a racist, does that mean the millions of people who have laughed at his jokes, bought his videos, seen him live etc racist too?

What about the TV companys who paid him to appear on TV, were they racist too?
in a word...yes

its passive racism. its the ''them and us'' syndrome.

its people who think its ok to single out, ridicule and be cruel to people of other colours because ''its just a laugh innit''
its people who make comments simply because other people do, or only say it in private - because if no-one hears its ok...right?
its people who say ''i'm not racist, but...''

not all racists are members of the kkk, or violent and agressive - most are just ignorant and don't understand that any form of ''them and us'' behaviour is a level of racism
and even if he hadn't been racist, he was certainly in no way a genius!!
joko, have you never laughed or singled out one single person io your entirte life? Have you never made a remark on any person or group, which could fall into your "them and us" catergory? Are you the perfect human being this world has been searching for?

Get real. Wake up and smell the coffee. THis them and us is just a form of human nature links back to animal beahviour, its not racism.

I think it shows that everyone now seems to take themselves so seriously and they have forgotten what jokes are about..I remember in the 70s we had John Inman the stereotypical gay man ( I am a gay man and I found him funny)and the likes of Love thy neighbour etc..No one at the time really gave a hoot or took it seriously..The same with Bernard Manning..He was a COMEDIAN ,not BIn Laden inciting hate throughout the world. And I dont remember any Sect or group declaring war on Bernard Manning or a fatwah against him like Salman Rushdie ( twice). Bring back the days before Political Correctness Please ! before we all forget we could laugh about peoples differences and realise that they were jokes....
and realised they were jokes not insults ! missed that off! oops !
Question Author
It wasnt my intention to have a heated debate when posted this question ,but its been interesting my personal view is that theres a difference between a joke, and racist remarks,i dont think anyone can honestly hold their hands up 100% and say they have never laughed either inwardly or outwardly at someone who is different to them at one time it is like a previous person stated a natural human instinct.ive been to a bernard manning gig it was a stag night and there was blacks in the audience laughing as hard as anyone.i just wonder how many people who complain about bernard are black, gay or whatever i think its probably mainly white people who moan.
no spaced i haven't laughed at anyone for being black, or gay, or jewish or whatever - whats to laugh at?
is there something inherently funny about it?
i can't see anything.

i may laugh at their behaviour or something they said, but not simply because they are ''a bit different''.

I don't think in terms of ''them and us''.
the fact that you do seems rather ''small town''.

i am not personally offended by BM - how could i be - his opinion and views are irrelevant to me.
the fact is many were and he knew it, yet he still thought it hilarious to be nasty - yes nasty.

if understand the comedy and i agree he had a good comedy sense, but the fact that he felt the need to find unwilling stooges to make himself funny is sad.

if i believed for one minute that the things he said were purely for comedy value, an act, and he felt differently in reality, i would not have a problem with him, but i know they are not.

bear in mind that what most people have seen of BM is a toned down version of his act for tv - his live shows are much worse.
whatever you say about human nature, the them and us thing is only as a 'safety' thing - tribal.
rival tribes were a physical threat, as are other animals.
its natural to notice differences - but not to attack simply because of it. there is no fight or flight issue here.

we don't have that worry nowadays - we have nothing to fear from a black face or a jewish or gay person.
'they' pose no threat, so to stand up and make a living out of being cruel and nasty about them is not human nature.
you might also want to consider the bigger picture here.

people learn by emulation - bm may have stood up in front of a crowd who liked, understood and appreciated his 'comedy', but many of those would then go away and use his ' jokes' as ammunition in their racist behaviour - it would fuel their beliefs, because lets face it, many people who like bm are racist - many may not be, but most of his audience are.
many people can see what he does for what it is - an attempt at comedy, but many more ignorant people see it is as fact and a searing portrayal of minority groups.
they go away thinking they can say and do what they like ''for a joke'' and anyone who is bothered just has a chip on their shoulder.

my sisters boyfriend did exactly this.
in his neanderthal brain, an entire workforce singling out the one black guy in the place and constantly making racist comments - then saying ''just a laugh mate'' afterwards, was absolutely fine!
i know it wasn't a joke because he is an out and out racist - he uses the n word behind closed doors - which is apparently ok because no-one black can hear him!!!

he claimed the lad didn't mind because he never said anything and just smiled!!

.. well what was he supposed to do ? get upset? say stuff back? take them all on? the fact that the ''banter'' was all one way says it all... i guarantee he didn't like it or find it a big laugh.
fortunately he listened to what i said and stopped the 'jokes' and amazingly he got to know this lad and likes him ... however all other black people are still bad...
Joko you make valid points, but personally i think you have too much time on your hands.

get real
I don't think there can be one person who hasn't laughed at the old Englishman, Irishman and Scotsman jokes that have been told in the past. Usually the Scotsman was tight with his money and the Irishman was made out to be the stupid one. This is racist, no matter what anyone says. If you laugh at any race or nationality then it must be racist. Why can't people just have a laugh without the PC brigade coming out in force?
ooh, good one spaced.

racist bigot
he was a bloody ****-awful comedian.. he clearly disrespected people
