I emailed the Beeb about this, the response...
Thank you for your e-mail regarding 'Heroes'.
I understand that you would like to know who sings the version of 'The End of the World' that is played during the trail for this programme.
I can tell you that the song is sung by Nina Gordon. This is available on the album 'Tonight & The Rest of My Life' although I would recommend that you listen to this before you purchase it to ensure that it is the correct
version.
If you are a fan of 'Heroes' you may like to visit the programme website for further information:

However - I've listened to a sample of the Nina Gordon version and I'm not convinced it's the right one. It's also not the Brenda Lee version that I've heard either.
Sorry, this probably doesn't help much. Just thought I'd share the frustration!

This is what I found on wikipedia:
"The song has been covered by a number of artists on albums, including The Carpenters, Loretta Lynn, Herman's Hermits, John Cougar Mellencamp, Johnny Mathis, Julie London, Eddy Arnold, Dottie West, Nancy Sinatra, Sonia Evans, Twiggy, Claudine Longet, Agnetha Fltskog (of ABBA fame), Patti Page, Anne Murray, Nina Gordon, Vonda Shepard, Expos, The Vanguards, and others, but Davis' remains the definitive performance."
