There are currently only a few channels that broadcast in hd - and those channels only broadcast a few programs in that format:

There is a free channel on sky - 286 - but I assume you need the hd box to view it.

If you don't watch these channels a lot , it's not worth subscribing to yet.

I have normal sky with hd tv and can't watch any of the channels, tho there is talk of eventually being one available on freeview. Think its a bit of a rip off at the moment 299 for the box and 10 a month for subscription for the handful of channels broadcasting in hd
my brother had a sky hd box, he only ever watched sky sports 1 hd and the discovery channel hd. watching his sky the picture was amazing compare to the normal sky sports, but in the long run it's not worth the money, it's a rip off. there is hardly any hd channels, and his box wouldn't even allow him to watch bbc hd, he got rid of it after 6 months. wait until they have more HD channels, they should really all be in hd considering it's "sky HD". He said he'd get it again but only when the majority of the channels are in HD.
Sky can't broadcast in hd if the programme isn't made in a hd format - it's not a simple option or conversion.
