can i get freeview with an old skybox through an ordinary ariel

No a Sky box will not work with an aerial.

If you have a Sky dish and a Sky box you can get Freesat from Sky where you pay a one-off fee to Sky to get about 200 channels.

There is no mnothly fee for this, so it is Sky's equivalent of Freeview.
