Very Strange Sewing?

Very random question . . when I was at school, a lady used to come in and do this what I would class as 'sewing' with us. It involved a sewing cushion and there was this long wooden thing/s from it. I don't remember making anything big, more like a bookmark shape. Really can't remember it that well but does anyone have any idea what it could be? Thanks

Sounds like bobbin or pillow lace ! The lace is made upon a *pillow* and the bobbins are like bits of stick with thread wound up on them. Here's a pic of some in action
