GMTV - Anti-Fat!

In light of the stick they got over the April fools they did, they have now put out their 'Bikini body' segment, where they are going to help women look good for summer! Great... however!

The advert for it is a bit wrong I think! It shows overweight people on a beach walking about with a voice-over saying "You don't want to look like this, this summer" It cuts to some skinny models and voiceover says "You want to look like this!"

GMTV promises to help us all get a body like that! What a load of rubbish and a real way of making women feel even more inadequate!

Try reading Eamonn Holmes's autobiography and see what he thinks of them!

Well, to be fair, I am the perfect weight if I was about 6 inches taller!! Hee hee

But most woman dont want to look like that and are really paranois when it comes to wearing bikinis so it would interest alot of people. Unfortunately most women arent as confident as some can be who dont care what they look like.

I've already left for work by the time GMTV starts, so I haven't seen the clip.

Are they showing grossly overweight women to start followed extreme skinny?

Yes, they don't show faces, but the women are quite overweight!

I just think its giving the impression that a) you can go from that to skinny! and b) making those who are overweight feel bad!

Its what gets people wanting to do it. Yes it may be false advertsing but so are half the adverts on tv. Its only false advertising if you fall for it.

I kind of agree with you that it's not fair to be telling the viewer what they want to look like. There are loads of women who are grossly overweight and don't feel good about themselves and to pu the idea into their head that they can be skinny by Summer, which is a matter of weeks away, is not healthy and is poor judgement on GMTV's part as I imagine that a lot of women take what they say as gospel, therefore GMTV are abusing that position.

I do have a but though......to be grossly overweight really isn't healthy and I do think that those that are should be encouraged to lose a bit. If GMTV were serious about helping those that want it rather than only pull in the ratings, then they should have started the campaign at the beginning of the year and the target being the UK average size 16, not the minority size 8.

They had said there was a new slimming pill on the market that was proven to work.

Needless to say, quite a few people desperate to lose the weight logged into the site only to be told it was an April Fool joke.

Yes I agree with you, that would be far more realistic and it would allow people to feel that they are in sight of loosing weight. But the comparison is so unrealistic! It's self defeating just looking at the skinny women!

I think the point is that being over weight is unhealthy, but the advert isn't promoting health, just the beauty aspect of it!

I think they have good ideas, but they could do with a bit more tact when promoting I suppose!

It isn't just larger ladies who feel self conscious in a bikini/swimsuit,i'm a size 8/10 and very flat chested after breast feeding my son and I would NEVER go out in public in a swimsuit of any kind! I have always envied the women who can do it no matter what their size.
