Can anyone tell me the distance from San Francisco Bay to the island of Alcatraz -Thanx

I should say it is a just over a mile from the shore.

When I say "shore" I mean the northern edge of San Francisco city, near Fishermans Wharf.

There's a teen novel by Gennifer Choldenko, called Al Capone Does My Shirts, which is set on Alcatraz and is about the children and families of the staff who live there (their families also lived with them). Whilst it's fictional, the author has visited and familiarised herself with Alcatraz and there are some good descriptions and pictures of it included in the book.
