I was brought up on a rough council estate and studied and worked hard to improve my life and provide a good upbringing for my children. The difference being that despite illness and having 7 kids, my parents pretty much always worked, at sometimes both of them, which was not that usual in the 70s, my Dad did nights and watched us days, my Mum worked days and sorted out the house at nights - all our clothes were hand made as were our meals. It is the example that we were set that has made myself and my brothers and sisters who we are today.

My kids have what I would class as a midle class upbringing but go to the local school with the kids from the local council estate and whilst I make them speak properly in our house and in our company, I would not have them putting down any of the kids on the basis that they are from a disadvantaged background.

How the parents of that posh girl, apparently intelligent people, allowed her to carry on believing those stereotypes beggars belief.
I was shouting at the telly as I listened to the 'posh' kid. I really could not believe what was coming out of her mouth. As for her attitudes...a lot had to come from her parents.
But Annie, I think it was the parents (mohter in particular) who gave that rich brat the stereotyping beliefs in the first place. Did you see the stuck up twit's face when the daughter was describing the other girl.

The 'poor' girl is a star - I really hope she drags herself out of that horrid life her mother has saddled her with. She has had no proper childhood & my heart goes out to her. And that poor little lad sleeping on that floor. Mum didn't look that depressed to me; just a lazy mare who's let the daughter take over as head of the family.

As as rich little Alice in Wonderland did admit herself at the end - her initial opinions were based on "pure ignorance" and even she had the grace to admit she was proved wrong.

I felt numb after watching that programme and unbelievably sad - for both of them in a strange way.
Salla, thats what I meant about the posh parents - I would never allow my children to speak about children less fortunate than themselves like that. Ok, the posh parents were probably brought up in the same manner as they are bringing up their daughter, but they are apparently intelligent people, so surely they can now take a more balanced view as adults.

Also, I thought that Natalies mother almost looked a touch simple. And I applaud the girl for caring for her brother, it is not an easy thing to live with someone with depression.
