Is the rate of expansion greater in our current epoch or is the speed of light slowing down as a function of the age of the universe?

Just when we thought we knew it all, in confirming what we thought we knew we find the numbers of questions growing exponentially to the rate of answers. We just need to get out there with new observational equipment, much of which has been conceived on paper but awaits deployment to gather the data that will provide the necessary confirmations that will undoubtedly lead to the formulation of our next generation of questions.

To some it might all seem futile but it keeps us busy and such thoughts keep dangerous minds such as ours occupied and off the streets. If only we could add to the mix the budget for incarceration.

You asked for thoughts and mine might not be exactly what you were looking for. But if this encourages other answers I'm only to happy to help.

I suppose the answer to ^ that ^ question might hinge on how easily our curiosity and desire for understanding is appeased. Some may disagree but I�m only grateful enough to enjoy the benefits of the knowledge we have gained so far to encourage further exploration.

Leave it to me to turn a science question into a philosophical discussion. :o)

Actually, Berti, when it comes to understanding the mysteries of the universe, I don't believe we've even scratched the surface.

Thank goodness some scientists can question well held ideas without being called a crank. Didn't early observers believe the world was flat?

Afterall , it's not a mystery, if one fully understands - is it ?

Actually Rov the idea that people though the world was flat is a bit of an urban myth.

A few Early greeks thought that but at the same time one ( Eratosthenes ) knew enough to measure the diameter of the Earth and get it right to within about 10%

Seafarers knew the earth was round as they could see the masts of ships over the horizon and later could calculate lattitude.

This is an interesting theory, but it's very new. It has yet to show that it is at least as good as existing theories, that it can explain what we see as well as they do before offering alternative explanations.

A bit of a case of running before you can walk.

As fot the <Spooky voice> mysteries of the Universe <\Spooky voice> It's obvious we'll never understand everything but it's amazing how much we already can and do understand.

That knowledge really is one of the crowning achievements of our civilisation - which is why we mustn't stop probing and extending that knowledge, there's still so much more we can learn.
