Recordable Virgin Digi Box - should the bottom of it get this hot??

I have a Vrigin Recordable Digi Box, I picked it up to clean the shelf today and the bottom of the digi box is very hot. Is this normal??
also every so often it sounds like the motor starts up for a while then turns its self off, whats that all about??

Yes ... and yes.
Transformer in base .. so base in one area will get pretty warm.
That's hard drive or the cooling fan. Again normal.
Some are noisy, some very quiet.

Be sure the box is on a hard surface so that it has a space underneath for air to cool it down.and not some pretty thick cloth.
