Metropolis and Smallville

Just been watchibng Season 2 of Smallville which ends with Clark biking off into Metroplolis.In the DC Universe what is the relationship of Metropolis and Smallville? I know they are allegories of small towm and Big City . Smallville is in Kansas however and i've always thought of Metropolis as being New York .Yet characters from Smallville are constantly flying into Metropolis .I'm confused and i havent even worked out where Edge City is supposed to be! DC Enthusiasts step up to the Plate!

Just as a postscript , things get even weirder when you enter the animation world . Gotham in BATMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES is in a sort of 1940's TimeWarp where TV is in Black and White , everyone drives Cords and Packards , Cops use Zeppelins and the music is Swing. However when Batman went to Metropolis in BATMAN /SUPERMAN MOVIE he crashes into a Club playing Modern Club music and planes are Jets. Most confusing!
