The Sweeney, Rhymming Slang
4 Answers
Watching an episode of the Sweeney the other day and Regan came out with the term "Peter" when refferring to a safe. Now I'm normally pretty good at figuring out Rhymming slang but I haven't a scooby (scooby doo, clue!) with this one, any ideas?? I have Googled and found lots about rhymming slang but nothing about this one. Thanks

A few examples are "The creep" for a night time burglar; "drum" house therefore "drummer" for house burglar. A screwmans chandler is a burglars toolmaker. "Blagger" is a wagesnatcher."Peter" is a safe and a peterman is a safecracker. Tom is a prostitute. Whizzer is a pickpocket. Bogeys, screws, grasses for police, prison officer and informer. I'm sure you can think of a few more. Hope this helps.
