I agree - it wasn't cohesive this week and in fact I can answer your question as my mind focused on some writing I was doing...so it became noise for noise's sake and a distraction when I wanted 10 secs off the keyboard.

The acting is usually pretty good......
I was confused as well. All I got was that Billy set Clive up and that was about it. It is a brilliant series but very confusing.
I take it you mean the Clerks office

The other lady lawyer, Nina, wants Billy out she suspects him of lining his own pockets at the lawyers, she fancies Billys assistant (John I think) and want to promote him. Billy is fighting for his career. Clive was wavering about Billy and so set him up, so that he would be on his side. If a lawyer loses his "seat" in chambers it is very difficult to get another, if one was discredited as being disloyal it would be even worse and of course a Silk would be out of the question.
What does the Senior Clerks job involve? Why does Billy seem like he can bully and manipulate everyone?
Legal cases are sent out to the barristers chambers..........the senior clerk divvies them out. The implication being that he can confine certain barristers to endless cases defending drunks, etc. rather than giving them the more lucrative jobs, or high-profile cases where they can bring themselves to the notice of 'the establishment'.
jth, good explanation, are you in fact in the 'legal business' ?Ron.
Ideal job for a control freak then!
I've been involved in it in the past, WR.
But no longer, thank goodness..........
Jack - Is it also the case that the senior contact point for chambers is the senior clerk and therefore the chambers business rises or falls on keeping solicitors "sweet"? That always seems the way its portrayed on TV - so it must be true :-)
