A. Critics say Brando's early performances were his best, and he was most noteworthy as the sweaty Stanley Kowalski in Tennessee Williams's A Streetcar Named Desire in 1951, in which he is dubbed 'mean and moody' .
There are other early films on interest, including Julius Caesar, in which Brando played Marc Anthony, which was made in 1953. He also appeared in Viva Zapata! and The Wild One, at about the same time, as the biker who became a poster pin-up rebel for a generation.
In 1954 Brando appeared in On The Waterfront as ex-boxer Terry Malloy, which has been hailed as Brando's other great performance. In both Streetcar and On the Waterfront, Brando was directed by Elia Kazan.

Q. Which films did he go on to make
A. After the success of On The Waterfront, Brando appeared in Guys and Dolls the following year, but would never match his performance again. He starred in One-Eyed Jacks in 1961, Mutiny on the Bounty in 1962 and did virtually nothing until The Godfather in 1972. In fact in the 60s, he had 14 virtual flops in a row before his portrayal of a Mafia don in the Oscar-winning Godfather. That year Brando also made Last Tango in Paris with Bernardo Bertolucci. This performance has been criticised as his most over-rated - he has an empty affair with Maria Schneider in an empty Paris apartment.
In 1976, he camped it up on the range in The Missouri Breaks, followed by a role playing Christopher Reeve's father in Superman in 1978. He appeared as a Us Army colonel in Apocalypse Now in 1979, and The Freshman in 1990.

Q. What is his latest film
A. Brando is appearing alongside Robert de Niro and Edward Norton in Frank Oz's The Score, released about now. The film revolves around De Niro's Nick Wells, a master safe-cracker, who is persuaded by his old friend and fence Max (Brando) to perform one last job before he settles down with his Montreal jazz club and on-off girlfriend (Angela Bassett). The target is a jewel-encrusted sceptre locked away in the basement of the Montreal Custom House. Jack (Edward Norton), the cocky new thief on the block, gets inside by pretending to be a mentally disabled janitor.

Q. How old is Brando
A. At 77, Brando has become a Hollywood legend, a heavyweight, literally. Hailed as the most influential screen actor of the 20th century, he is now battling obesity. His lifestyle too is the stuff of legend. He has 11 acknowledged children: five by his three wines, three by his Guatamalan housekeeper and another three from affairs. On set, he perfers to act with an ear-piece so his girlfriend can feed him his lines.
