Serenity is a science fiction drama. The film is an extension of the cult TV series Firefly created by Joss Whedon who also brought us Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin off Angel. Serenity stars Nathan Fillon, Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk and Summer Glau.

The film did not do well at the box office which was unusual as both critics and audiences loved it. However, after the DVD release Serenity became the cult classic it was destined to be. The film is darker than the TV series and follows on directly from the final episode. The scattered humour and larger than life characters made the film very watchable and viewers found themselves being endeared to the mismatched crew of the Serenity.

The style of the film was heavily influenced by the Wild West and this can be seen in some of the weaponry and costumes. The characters are depicted scrapping out a living on the edges of society and are remnants of the losing side in the war.

The story is set 500 hundred years in the future as a ragtag bunch of space traders struggle to maintain an existence when they discover a secret that could shatter the fragile peace. With the addition to the team of a psychic teenager and her brother the crew are dragged across space to uncover one of the Government’s biggest secrets.
