The Little Mermaid is the classic romantic tale that love conquers all. Based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale of the same name the Disney film was given credit for breathing life back into the animated feature film genre and marked the start of the Disney renaissance era.
Audiences felt The Little Mermaid was one of Disney’s best animated films ever. Disney really made an effort with the visuals especially the underwater scenes. The music is also responsible for the popularity of this film with its catchy tunes and fun lyrics. The characters are well written and the evil Ursula and her two Hench eels flotsam and jetsam are truly scary. Ariel is the first in a long line of headstrong heroines and this marks a departure for Disney from the archetypal swooning princess and brings the films into the modern age and makes them easier to relate to.
The film won two Academy Awards, for Best Song ("Under the Sea") and Best Score. The film also won Golden Globe awards for Best Song ("Under the Sea") and Best Score.
The age old story of a mermaid who falls in love with a human prince is told well. Ariel also has support from her friends Flounder and Sebastian but when she tangles with Ursula the evil octopus witch things start to get sticky.
