Mitsubishi Shogun or Range Rover?

I'm thinking of buying a secondhand diesel 4x4 for the winter so as I can counter any snowfall or heavy rains we may have beeter than in a "normal" car (I currently drive an old Series 7 Beemer).

I really like the old Mitsubishi 2.8 TD Shoguns (circa 1995-1997), but someone has suggested that a Range Rover of a similar age would be as nice/good, if not better.

Never having really looked into 4x4s in the past, I'm hoping that my fellow ABers can help me, please?

So, if I've got about £2,000 to spend, which one should I go for?

Rangies are great, when they work, reliability is not a strong point.

How big a car do you need? Jimneys are reliable if they have been cared for and very good in snow.

not a big old bus....little and cute but super practical. Mine lasted me 10 years and had plenty of life left but the dogs grew out of it. I used it in the New Forest all year round with nary a hiccup.

Selectable 4x4, Coil springs, Low range gears, A-frame rear axle.
We never got stuck anywhere with ours, and that was well used taking Dogs out and about.

Mitsubishi, much more reliable than a Range Rover.

Neither are brilliant in my opinion, Rangies blow headgaskets for the fun of it and Shoguns have about the worst gearboxes in the world. That being said I've had plenty of both and of the two I'd go for a Rangeover having been let down twice by Shogun gearboxes.

Tough as old boots, reliable and you can pick em up pretty cheap now as they are 'discontinued'

£2k might get you a tatty but functional mid 90's Toyota Landcruiser....the best of the best.

suzuki vitara are worth a look at, I had one for ten years , serviced yearly , cost me 2 new tyres and a battery, all in all a good motor, never let me down.

I've already got an idea of insurance and it's not an issue.

With regards to my Beemer, I'd be selling it prior to buying a 4x4.

Mileage on a car has never bothered me - a lot of my cars have had high mileage, but have been well looked after.
