Changing Number Plates

My Dad has a dateless plate on his 1970 classic car which I would like to put on my new car. What kind of number plate would then go on to his car? What would be the costs involved? As his is quite a valuable plate I would only be 'borrowing' the plate until he decides he wants it back... is something like this worth doing for a short term?

Your Dad's car will be allocated a random unused plate from its year of first registration. 1970 plates are of the form ABC999H or ABC999J depending on the month of registration.

In 1974 I imported my car from Belguim. The car was 1969 so I expected a 69 plate. Wrong I was given a 74 plate. Maybe the rules have changed since then. The log book I was issued with stated the car was 69.
