My toyota has developed a load humming noise which can even drown out the radio when i am doing 50mph. My son thinks its a wheel bearing wearing out. Do you think that either halfords or kwik Fit are the place to get it checked and repaired?

I wouldn't trust those companies with a dinky toy! I'd take it to a garage with a qualified mechanic.
I would recommend going to a few small local garages and get some different points of view. If you have any Toyota specialists (not dealer) near you, all the better, they will have seen it before if it is a common problem on that particular vehicle, or they will suggest what else it could be although it sounds like a wheel bearing to me.
Kwik fit would be fine for that simple job, we use them a lot for our car, we get a great service, just a little slow.
Jack up the wheel and rotate it. Listen for any unusual noise and feel for any roughness as it rotates, this may indicate that the bearing is damaged and needs to be replaced.

Try this before you start spending a lot of money.
last place on earth would be kwik fit totally useless will probably say you need another 10 things doing on your car as well
I'd agree with Benny - try a local independent garage - do NOT use KF
K.F. Halfords, lol lol lol lol lol lol you must be on a good wage Tooj, as said, find a local family run garage & not the dealership.

Thanks everyone. Ive found a local garage and its going to cost me £123. What does anyone think about Kwik Fit MOT at only £30, or 20% off combined serice and MOT. Now that seems a good deal! TWR - I'm not on good wage I'm on a pension and I'm trying to get the best deal I can find
KF Mot £30.... List of "work" needed to pass Mot lots of ££££££s
Before getting my new car, I had several MOTs done (half-price or even £20) at F1 autocentres. The car always passed, and they never "found" any work that needed doing. I rate them highly.

gingejbee, who are F1 Autocentres?
Kwik Fit will find a lot of work that 'HAS' to be done if you take a car into them for an MOT. Never yet heard of a first time pass at Kwik Fit.
tooj: As you can see, they have loads of branches - and have a "price promise" on everything. So, if you find a really cheap MOT offer locally, they will beat the price. That's what i used to do - they were always happy to do it and the cars always passed first time.
Tooj, My humor no offence meant, never take to K.F. If you go in there for a bulb they will tell the car needs a New Engine, alway do the search Tooj.
I've taken my cars to KwikFit for MOTs for years now and I've never been given a list of things to be corrected. In fact, on more than one occasion they have supplied and fitted number plate bulbs and an exhaust bracket free of charge to prevent a failure.

Not saying KF is perfect but I speak as I find, and I hope all those who criticise them do the same.
If kwikfit were ripping off drivers with the mot VOSA would take their licence off them for doing them !

VOSA do regular checks on mot stations and any garages not following the correct work would loose their mot status !
