Cost of Starter Motor for VW Golf mk4 1998

How much does a New / re-conditioned Starter motor cost for a VW Golf mk4 1998.

I've been quoted �120 for a reconditioned one from the local garage. Is this a fair deal, or is it a rip off?

Depends a bit on the exact model but Doesn't sound like a rip off but certainly a price with a healthy commission attached.

I ran through and got quoted �66.50 +VAT+ delivery for a new one.

I'd be doubtfull you'd get a garage who'll supply one for that because they all make commission on parts sales and with the upkeep of the garage, staff costs exactly aren't going to be able to compete with an on-line box shifter.

Check them out yourself for your exact model, you could see if you can find anybody who'd fit a part you supply possibly a mobile mechanic.
