Car Hire Nice Airport

Hi all. Heading for Nice next week with the family for 10 days but am a little nervous about the car hire. I've driven down to France in my own car for the last 5 years so hiring is new to me. The more I read up on it the more worried I get!, it seems like horror story after horror story. I'm going to use Alamo as these seem to fair slightly better than the others (although far from perfect!). Apparently the queues at the car hire in Nice are very long and slow, does anybody have experience of this? I'm going to take out car hire excess insurance with Axa before I go. Will this be sufficient or will I still get the hard sell when I get to the desk? Travelling with the wife and 3 kids by the way! Thanks
