I know this may sound silly but...can I charge my phone by using the micro lead in phone and the other usb end (which I normally plug into the wall charger) dirctly into my new car's usb port?

I know cars are 12v - is that what it charges at thru the mains?

All USB sockets provide 5V DC. If the charger cable for a phone plugs into a USB socket, you can use any USB socket, including the one in your car.
