Are they cheap cars?

No SUV is ever going to be cheap to run!

The tax on both the Qashqai and the X-Trail is the same, at £165 pa, for vehicles registered from April 2017 onwards. For older models, the tax on a Qashqai is £180pa, whereas it's between £220 pa and £360 pa (depending upon the exact version) for the X Trail.

A Quashqai will theoretically give you around 45 mpg (although I'd be amazed if you can achieve it in practice), whereas the equivalent figure for an X-Trail is around 38 mpg.

With a Quashqai, you might be able to get a model in an insurance group as low as 11 but some versions go up to Group 17. With an X-Trail you'll always pay more, as they're all within Groups 18 to 20.
neither.
i would go for a smart car
I’m own a corolla and at the moment according to the fuel consumption clock I average between 58 & 70 mpg town and urban combined
"I would go for a smart car".
Having had the misfortune to be a passenger in one, I wouldn't want one as a gift...and all the 2 and 3-star reviews seem to agree.

Have you thought about a VW Tiguan or Skoda Karoq / Kamiq?
Toyota Yaris.
what was wrong with being a passenger in it gingebee?
how many gallons to the mile on a Tiguan - wouldn't think they are economical at all....
Indeed not - Parker's info -'Petrol engines 28.1 - 46.3 mpg' - about the same as my T-Roc
'Diesel engines 34.9 - 55.4 mpg'
my mate has a Tiguan 2 litre diesel - gets between 50 & 60 mpg.
I have a 2015 Ford c-max 1.6tdci, only £30 tax, 50+ mpg around town, cheap parts, reliable, comfy, huge boot area, pulls like a train, what's not to like!
As driven by Count Arthur Strong, no less! ;-)
The wise old Arthur has a Hillman Minx, tax exempt no less!
He would. He couldn't be bothered with all that unleavened fuel and electrosonic ignition stuff.
