My Ford Ka insists on showing me which gear to be in, such as change up to 5th as I'm about to slow down for a bend - duh! As I've been driving for 55 years, I resent this! Can it be disabled?

You're not alone, JuniperEccles! https://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/119724-65-ka-5th-gear-at-30mph/ By coincidence, I've just purchased a car with a 6-speed gearbox and I'm learning to largely ignore its advice to move into 5th (or even 6th!) gear at 30 mph!

Most modern cars do this, I doubt it can be disabled.
My last car had similar "assistance" which was laughable in its execution. I just ignored it, having over 60 years experience.

Sounds like I'm just going to have to carry on shouting at it, then!
Yeh wait until you change cars again and have one that squeals at you if you drive over the white lines or decides for itself whether or not its time to put the lights on!

Did your Saab expire, Chris? I got rid of mine last year.
When I drive my wife's Fiesta I am surprised how often I am reminded to change to 5th or 6th, not realising I am still in 4th. The sound deadening is so good I don't realise.
(6 gears is too many)
Wise up, - get an automatic: How can anyone want a manual transmission in this day & age?
Khandro:
Having driven many, many automatics during my trade-plating days, I can say without any hesitation whatsoever that I'd never buy one! They're horrid!

Hopkirk:
I can just about cope with 6 gears but I was never too fond of driving trucks with a dozen or more!

GG:
Yes, my beloved old Saab 9-3 has gone to the big garage in the sky (otherwise known as the scrapyard a few miles down the road from me). It was running on 3 cylinders (although that was actually extremely hard to notice when driving it) and it would have cost £1500 to fix. So I spent that money on a Honda Accord instead. (I got £350 for the Saab at the scrapyard though, which I thought wasn't at all bad).
You did well, Chris - I got £100 for my 900!
Khandro my own car doesn't even have a gearbox - it's electric.
I love it.

I think I'm to old for changing gear now.
Poppycock, Hoppy. I'm older than you and I'm going to miss changing gear. :-)
i can turn this of in my kia
My Skoda Yeti does this and I find it a bit distracting. I try to ignore it but I can't help having a quick glance to see if it agrees with the gear I'm in!
Do people not test drive a car before they buy it? If I drove a car that had some feature I didn't like I just wouldn't buy it.

I couldn't test-drive my car because I bought it during lock-down.
Driving automatics is not proper driving
We have a Ford C Max and it does the same thing. At least it doesn't make a noise just a light on dashboard saying to change up or down. The salesman told us just to ignore it. The one that annoys us is the front and rear sensors which sometimes go off for no reason at all. To many buttons on cars these days, we even have one that will park the car for us but never use it. Tried it once but didn't like it. It did work though. Having been a HGV driver when I was younger I trust my own judgement more than some of these new fangled things.
Bhg, most manual cars do this.
