My car has 46000 on the clock. It makes a terrible clunk when starting up. Noisey on acceleration and decelleration..metalic clunk again. Continuous noise on overrun. Noise( Rattling) low down at back of engine below exhaust manifold. Burnt out clutch replaced at 45000. The Ford garage has checked in the gearbox..ordered a new fly wheel and then decided nothing wrong with the one its got. They now think it may be the starter motor. This started before Christmas. Can anyone Help please?

The obvious would be a loose, broken or badly fitted exhaust touching the body or loose engine mounts or both but could be the starter if loose or the pinion is floating about and touching the starter ring, take it out and find out. If you've had a clutch fitted they would probably have disturbed the exhaust anyway and now it's had time to work free if it wasn't tighten properly.
a fairly common one is the rear engine mounting. if it feels like the whole engine is moving or indeed if you can rock the engine forwards and backwards then thats the place i would look.
Check the wishbone bushes, I had a similar sounding problem and that's what it turned out to be.

Thanks Stanlyman and others. Garage say they are replacing the starter moter tomorrow,Saturday. Hope it works!. Will let you know the outcome. If not ,you will see the smoke from where you are.

It was not the starter motor (which was replaced)! It was the Dual Mass Flywheel that needed changing. Thanks for all answers received.Total bill 930. Ford are investigating why one of their Dealers took so long to discover the fault when I had suggested the above three months ago!!
