Can anyone tell me when the clutch pedal is depressed on my ford escort 1995 model, it sometimes makes a cracking noise, and it is then difficult to engange the gear, this happens without any warning. The mechanic fitted a new clucth about four months ago, when this problem happened previous, and now it has returned, surley it cannot be a new clutch again. Can anyone help with this problem ?

if you got the work done by a reputable mechanic and not your buddy in his back yard. surely you must have got some kind of warranty.
Can you feel the "cracking" at the pedal with your left foot. I had a failed pedal mechanism where it joins the cable once (on a fiesta) which stopped the clutch fully disengaging.
One other thought - when the clutch was replaced did the mechanic replace the release (thrust ) bearing.
dont worry the same happened to mine but only in the cold 2 mechanics could not find the problem apart from the click it was fine
I believe it is something to do with the ratchet on the clutch pedal that 'self adjusts' the clutch... or so I was told by our mechanic at work.
It's the self adjustment ratchets that are worn and when the unit tries to 'self adjust' it slips back too far causing the symptoms and noise you describe - it's not an expensive part but a bit awkward to fit.
sounds like the clutch ratchet adjustor its located on the back of the clutch pedal. the clutch cable is connected to it. you will need to take off the brake pedal and the clutch pedal they are joined with a shaft which goes through both pedals and the clutch adjustor.. there is a circlip type clip on clutch pedal end plus another just inside the brake pedal end of the shaft. you will need to disengage the brake pedal first by removing the clip holding the pedal down. the shaft should slide out towards the centre of the car. refitting is reverse remember to keep all the spacers in the correct order. it cost me about 8 (from ford) for the adjustor and 1 hour 45 mins of my time. about 100 at garage so if you got a little diy skills its worth the saving. make sure they give you the right part as mine doesn't have the ratchet part and has to have a special adjustor. hope this helps a bit and good luck. just a thought you might have a bit more room by taking the drivers seat out although i didn't bother. all tools i needed were a couple of screwdrivers a torch and plyers.
right the garage is pulling a fast on one ya. all it is, is that the adjuster is going. they consist of loads of little teeth that wear out replace this and your promblems will be no more. check this site out http://www.apracing.com/roadcar/clutch/epmods. htm
