I have a 2001 mondeo and last night it started to make a whirring noise from the engine. At first i thought it was lack of oil and checked it and to me it looked way past the min requirements untill this morning when i checked it again it was dead on min.

Anyway ive topped the oil up and it sounds like a belt thats making the noise etc? The whirring changes if i rev the engine up and it defo sounds like its inside the engine.

cheers if any1 can help and sorry for the rushed post.

Get it checked now because if it's the cambelt and if it breaks it is going to cost !

providing it has a distrabutor, cheach the metalick plates in there, when they wear down it can cause the engine to cough or whirr

Hey guys thx 4 posting!

Yeah when i think of it the engine is sounding like a diesel with that tap tap tap type noise.

i think they engines are chain driven i may be wrong tho it may be a aux belt tensioner or guide that may be needing replaced if its not nothing to do with the timing side of it

My 2lt Zetec Mondeo developed a similar noise. I traced it to the drive belt side of the engine, but it was night and I was a long way from home so called for assistance. The mechanic who came out said it was probably the drive belt idler pulley and I was recovered home. I had bought the car from an auction and had got my garage to give it a full service with all new belts and idlers.

They changed the idler pulley under warranty but within a few miles the noise was there again. They changed it twice more plus a new drive belt but the noise kept coming back.

The garage is owned by a friend and I have known the staff for years and I watched them do all this (so they were not messing me about). A squirt of WD40 helped for a while and I realised that apart from the noise the car performed fine. So try to see if the noise is coming from this idler - it is at the top front behind the plastic shield.

I have done about 5000 miles since then and the noise has almost vanished. The only clue as to the cause was the fact that it occurred in winter with heavy electrical loads. But now I'm using the aircon and loading up the drive train again but the noise is only there on odd occasions. I think if it was something really bad it would have occurred by now.

Just been checking it again and yeah like you said the noise is coming from the drivers side at the top where the fan belt is. I looked around there for the pulley etc but with me not having any mechanical experience im not sure what im looking for.

get some wd40 or similar and spray the belt and see if it goes away

Tried that still the same....thx for all the help though guys.

Tried the car this morning and the noise has gone!!!!??

Well i sprayed the belts to death last night with WD40 and it was still making the noise but now this morn its gone!

The 2001 Mondeos dont have cambelts but chains. these require no maintenance. Is the car a petrol model 1.8 or 2.0 litre? If its a rattle coming from the top of the engine, loud like tappets (it not the tapets though) its the inlet manifold swirl plates, it needs a new manifold 440 fitted from Ford
