1995 Dodge Caravan died and won't start

My 1995 Dodge Caravan made a knocking sound and then it died and won't crank. The lights come on when I try turning the key but it won't even turn over. For about 2 weeks prior I was having trouble with it dying when I would give it only a slight amount of gas. I really had to gun it to keep it from dying. When it acted like it was going to die the lights would dim slightly.
