Funny whirring noise....

I don't really know that much about cars so I apologise in advance about the lack of information. I drive a 2003 Ford Ka Sport SE 1.6. It has done 40,000 miles. Sometimes, when I start the engine, it makes what I can only describe as a high pitched whirring/squeaking noise that seems to go off as soon as I start driving. It seems to be worse in colder/damp weather and sometimes does not happen at all. What could be the possible causes? It is due it's MOT in a couple of weeks so I want to prepare myself for possible extra costs! Thanks.

Your fan belt needs replacing I would say.

Also I am not sure it is something they would fail your car on but it is very annoying I am sure, I bet you get some looks when you start your car.

yes it does sound like your fanbelt,it gets like that in damp weather,as it is getting too britle,will need to change it,its a very easy job,and should cost no more then a �10 for the belt,dont you know anyone who can fit it,its real easy.and would take about 15 mins

The old name for it is the fan belt - normally called the auxillary drive belt now as they drive just about everything except the fan - the squealing is caused by it slipping on the pulleys - may just need tightened up and not replaced - if your not sure get someone to look at it for you - if memory serves correct it is the newer modern splined belt and not the old V belt.
