Grinding noise from engine

I'm clueless about cars so wondered if anyone could enlighten me regarding the following and what the problem might be. When i'm in first or second gear, there is a grinding/crunching noise which sounds like it's coming from underneath the engine. It only happens when the clutch comes up and the accelerator goes down. Does anyone know what it might be? Thanks all
