something limiting revs at 3.5-4000 rpm on 98 (mk4) fiesta endura 1.3 8v

car revs as normal but limits itself to around 3500-4000 revs as if it has hit the limiter, it is still wanting to pull but simply wont. im fairly sure this is a sudden fault but i rarely rev higher than 3000 so couldnt be certain. any ideas?

Could be a failed catalytic converter. Sometimes the fragile ceramic matrix inside them breaks up, and effectively bungs up the exhaust.
