brake lights

My VW Beetle (new type) brake lights are stuck on even when I take out ignition key! Have to take out fuse when parked otherwise dead battery, suspect brake switch faulty but where is it and is it easy job? Can anybody offer advice please.

Brake lligth switches are usually at the top of the brake pedal but I suspect there is another fault with yours as they they dont normally stay on with the ignition off - there are some cars that do but not sure which make they are.

All Volkswagen brake lights work with the ignition on or off. My guess is that it will be the brake switch. I'll have a look for mine and let you know later - unless anyone else beats me to it !

Thanks very much both, seems strange VW brake lights work with ignition off but perhaps its a good idea anyway. I will look at brake pedal area for the switch! thanks again!

Right, here it is : This information applies to my Polo but I am sure the layout is very similar.

The stop-light switch is mounted on the pedal bracket below the fascia.) You may have to remove some trim to gain access)

Reach up behind fascia and disconnect wiring connector from switch.

Twist switch through 90 degrees clockwise and realease it from the mounting bracket.

Prior to refitting replacement switch you should fully extend the stop-light switch punger.

Fully depress and hold the brake pedal, then manoeuvre the switch into position. Secure the switch in position by twisting it through 90 degrees anti-clockwise, and release the brake pedal.

Reconnect the wiring connector and check the operation of the stop lights. The brake lights should illuminate after the pedal has travelled about 5mm.

Replace trim.

All this is from the Haynes manual. Sounds a bit fiddley, but good luck !
