problems with starting and some electrics on escort 96

some cold mornings my car will not start at all but will when jumped from a powerpack other mornings it starts ok.also when i press down on the break pedal the battery light shows up.now the lights are very dim when on full beam and when i want to use the main beam nothing happens so i have had to drive round on the middle light setting.when the lights are on the backlight to the in car clock and the stereo dim any ideas.ihave had the battery checked and was told there was not a problem!
