Ford Escort revving up

I have a Ford Escort automatic that has the following engine faults. I have to wait 10 to 15 minutes for the car to warm up, otherwise, it stalls when I put it into drive. When driving, it has a frequent habit of revving up randomly. I have become quite used to this and can sense when it is doing so, I pull over, switch off and back on and it returns to tickover. The car also has a high fuel consumpsion, about 20 mpg
Any ideas for a cure would be appreciated.
