Advice needed
Has any one removed a diesel rover 45 or 620 fuel injection pump in order to facilitate renewal of number four heater plug,, If so what is involved, or is there another way round it that i cannot see.
Any advice would be appreciated.

If there is a Fault, get them checked, To remove the pump as you can see is not a big job, but make sure you MARK the position of the pump to the body housing before you start, also, make sure the Injectors are covered incase of dirt

The points you make are quite valid, However I have two rovers with the same engine, one being the 620 diesel, and a 45 diesel, the 620 we have had for nearly three years now and has served us very well, the 620 has only 3 plugs fitted, i would think because of the injector pump being so close, however as the 620 is getting on a bit we decided to rplace it with the 45,and as my wife does nearly a thousand miles a week, every thing is checked thoughrougly before going into sevice, after doing belts and brakes , I noticed tis car had 4 plugs,thinking that rover had sussed the problem in the 5 years between each model being made ,I set about replacing them, three were replaced in about 1 hour, number 4 was out but would not quite clear the pump without undue force, which of course damaged it, i have now got to get number 4 back without any force, which as i have said looks like me having to remove pump or maybe slackening and hoping it will turn just enough to allow me slide the last one into place, although since i made the post i have read the rover service times, And it quotes 1 hour 20, for 3 plug models, and 4 hours 20 for 4 plugs, so I think we both know what is going to be done in that extra 3hours, don't we.

Hi again Peter, Just a thought, Check the lenghth of the Plug, and then check if there is a smaller replacement, Other than that as you may be aware its the pumps timing that you have to be carefull with, Providing you METAL MARK the housing cannot see any problems, It will be good to know how you get on. we must be linked mentaly in some way, as this is a thought that iv'e had, It is just a matter of going to a motor factors tomorow, ( monday) and seing if they have bin full of non specified plugs, and with a bit of luck I may find one that has the same physical reach with a shorter top.
If not then the pump will have to come off, wich is annoying when I know full well that this engine will start quite happilly with 3 plugs, as the 620 does,
will keep you posted.

Have now completed the job, I don't know if you are a mechanic or not, but if you are not well knowleged with injectors do not try doing this job yourself if you ever come accross it. I used to be quite handy for a diy mechanic, although age now prohibits me,any way my stepson who is a mechanic and a lot younger did the job last night (Monday ) It does involve removing all injector pipes, Injector belt and sprocket, mounting bolts, and the pump will then move back about two inches, and that is all that is needed to drop number 4 heater plug in, It would have to be an absolute last resort thing before I would contemplate doing it again, considering it will start on 3 plugs.
