Fiat Punto Air bag light on

The airbag icon sudenly came on and stayed on my dashboard lights the other day.
It's still on now a few days later when I started the car.

In the handbook it says take to a fiat dealer...
Just wanted to know if this is necessary or can I take it to any mechanic?

Is this likely ot be an expensive problem??

Punto's were prone to air bag problems, the exclusion switch and the connector in the N/S of the dash had problems, so did the N/S air bag its self, infact fiat had so many problems with these under warrenty that you had to be trained to DET leval 3 to do do warrenty repaires as so many ham fisted mechanics were causing more problems than they fixed, a good auto electician or dealers should be able to sort this out
