Have you checked whether the child safety lock mechanism is locked ?

thanks but at the moment unable to even open the door in question
its quite possible that the central door locking mechanism inside the door is faulty or that there is broken wire where the harness comes throught from the b/post by door hinges.if the car was in deadlock (ie you pressed the remote fob twice) the last you locked the car before the fault occured it may still be in the deadlock possition preventing you from opening the door manually inside or out, this is a security feature .you will probably have to get into car from the other & remove the door trim & then try & open the door-note you may have to damage the door trim a bit & then brake the lock mechanism.
