Mercedes 250TD key

I drive a 1998 Mercedes 250 Turbo Diesel saloon. One of the keys has stopped functioning. The main distributors have replaced the battery key, but no joy. They suggest a new key at �193!!! plus passport and evidence of ownership. What can I do apart from driving till the other key gives up ( or I lose it ) and then dump the old thing?
