could be a lot of things it'll be one of the sensors on the engine maybe an air-flow meter or crankshaft sensor but there are other sensor's,it'll need plugging into a diagnostic device to find out,if you've took it to an independant garrage & they have plugged it in but cannot find out what it is then you'll need to take it vauxhall & have it plugged into their tech/2 device.
I would hazard a guess that the EGR valve has had its day - a mechanic friend has cleaned a few of them but says the best idea is to replace them - i know they cost a lot but if the diagnostic is showing up the egr valve when being diagnosed, it needs to be replaced.
i agree with woodchopper if the fault has been diagnosed as the egr valve then the only way to cure it is to replace it as cleaning them rarely works, but if it hasn't been diagnosed as the egr valve then as i stated before get it checked out first as they can be expensive between 100 + 150 & if that isn't the fault you'll be back to square 1.
