what is the diff between h4 and h7 headlight bulbs, they are h4 in my volvo 740, would h7 work as well or better,thank you alun,,,,,

They are similar bulbs, but H4 is 2 pin, H7 is 3 pin, so they are not interchangable.

they are the same power , H7 (55w)is single filament so either dip or main beam used with separate dip / main beam headlamps, H4(55/60w) is dip and main beam in one bulb, the fittings make it impossible to interchange them
