Every time we hit a cold spell and my washer pump freezes up my fuse for the pump blows.Does anyone know if this either a common problem on astra life vehicles or merely just some sort of safety mechanism to prevent damage to the pump.Any help to rectify the problem would be appreciated.

I know that this isn't the answer that you're looking for, but if you keep it topped up with plenty of screenwash - you won't have this problem, as the screenwash lowers the freezing point of the water.
if your washer bottle contents have frozen, of course the fuse will blow, as the impeller on the pump cannot rotate,

astraman is right ,get some screenwash in, but make sure it is winter screenwash as it contains an anti-freeze ingredient,
but under no circumstance use ordinary anti-freeze that is designed for cooling sysrems.
