Mini cooper D and BMW 320D Costs

hi, im planning to purchase a car. What costs should i keep in mind including maintenance and repairs?

Im thinking of buying Either mini cooper D or bmw E46 320D coupe.

another thing is it advisable to purchase either for a uiniversity student?

but if i buy a diesel, shouln't it be fine?
i mean the cooper D gives a mpg of 75 and the BMW gives a average of 49.

insurance im probably looking at about 800 for the cooper D or 1200 for the bmw which is not so band for me.

what else can damage my wallet ?
