I've been told that fitting a 328i (twin pipe) exhaust system to my 1997 323i (which has a single pipe exhaust) will greatly improve the performance.

Is that true or am I being fed duff info?

Do not waste your money.
You can get negliable performance by extending the drop down pipes joint further. Its a waste.

if anything fitting the wrong exhaust could lower the power, every exhaust is tuned to the cars engine.
If this was true, what you have been told ( fitting 328i exhaust system to a 323i ) to greatlly improve performance then I feel sure that BMW would have fitted it as standard equipment anyway, plus i am sure it would be a common performance tweak amongst 323i owners anyway.

Many thanks guys!

darren - would I need to go to BMW or are there "independent" places that do "chipping"?
Don;t go to BMW because they don't do it. There are plenty of independent tuners that do though, just google it or get one of the mags such as Fast Car or something like that. the tuner's are always advertising in them.
