catalyc converter rule

hi, im just aout to buy a truck, which is abit old with around 100,00miles on the clock,

someone told me that a new rule was being brought out that states you have to renew your catalyc converter or get one put in.

is this true, or can i just buy a van tax, insure, mot and drive it without worrying about any new laws coming into play?

i would assume it depends on the size/type of vehicle, as you talk about MOTs then it must be light commercial,, usually cats are replaced when they wear out , ie fail the MOT on emisions or just fall apart .They are part of the exhaust system and as such are subject to rusting. At 100,000 it could quite possibly need replacing but if its got a current MOT dont worry about it. I cant imagine wanting to fit one in a vehicle that has never had one, in fact i think it would be far to costly to even think about it. Many have a sensor(s) fitted to them which measures gasses which in turn is picked up by the engine management system to control the running of the engine, it would require wiring ECUs and all sorts of things replacing or fitting.
