I have a J reg Escort with 1.6 CVH carburetta engine. The choke is the water operated type. Operates perfectly for starting but will not fully open. Consequently running rich and at too high revs on tickover. Any ideas on cause and solution? If all else fails is there a manual conversion available?

notoriously bad idea was this. the whole carb set up was poor. yes a manual choke should still be available and is infinitely better.
Ford always had a bad thing with their auto chokes, for as long as i can rememeber, i changed hundreds of fords to manual chokes, but none for years, you should be able to get a conversion kit from your local accessories shop, or you might want to try a secondhand unit form a scrap yard
