I can't find where to check the level of the gearbox oil. I have the Haynes manual but it's a bit vague.

Find the gearbox nut, as TWR says, undo it very slowly until oils begins to seep out, then tighten it up again. If none seeps out, even when nut is removed, then the gearbox may need topping up through the same hole, but gearboxes rarely lose oil these days.

That is an IB5 transmission.
What you on about again TWR? You do not raise the car to check .. It's under the bonnet in an open area facing forward halfway up transmission main casing. A hex plug.
If there is NO hex plug at all .. it is a sealed one. You can then only fill through a driveshaft hole or a drive access. IB5 boxes normally wear out or break before they need oil : )
