Motorhomes Towing Cars

I occasionally see holiday motor homes towing small cars on a rigid towbar.

What's that all about? They don't need a set of wheels on holiday, as they have a motorhome.

Some of them carry a motorbike or two as well, Hopkirk.
When you park up and start using it as a home, it's a bit of a pain tidying everything up again to go somewhere. Also many of the larger motor homes can't negotiate small roads.

It would be cheaper to take the occasional taxi
(then you could have a drink as well)
I have seen this, the motor home does around 15- 20 mpg the small car will do well over 50 mpg. Plus once the motorhome is 'on site' and plugged into mains electricity you do not want to move it.
my sister came over from Oz last year, and hired a camper van. she said she'd never do it again. it wouldn't fit in town centre car parks (height restrictions), and they ended up parking away from places they wanted to visit, and making their way back. and it was expensive on fuel.
I have actually seen one with a 'garage' in the back. They opened up these big doors at the back, pulled out some ramps and out came a Smart car. It was a pretty huge American style motor home though.
think too about super market car parks...much easier with a small car.
I've also wondered about the mileage shown on the odometer of the towed vehicle - would it include the 'towed' miles - I would sort of hope so, but with electronic rather than mechanical odos these days I wonder?
Wouldn't register dave, not without the ignition being switched on.
The milage will not show on the odemeter , the ignition will be off for a start. The towed car will be in neutral with the handbrake off so it's just a 'trailer'
A family just up the road from us does it. They pick an site central to where they want to be, then park up an tour the area using the car.
Not only are the motor homes too large for regular car parks, but you also have to pack up each morning before you go out for the day. Some people like to use the motor home as a caravan and tow the car rather than the other way round!
Hola Pedro. Thanks for popping in.
oops, wrong thread. Sorry Hopkirk

No probs, Sir P
Ratty if the one you saw with the Smart car in the back was in France or Spain it'll have been the first Mr Craft's.................
Yes it was just like that Hopkirk, but I saw it in the New Forest, Craft.

Going back to the very first answer, by Tonyav, that some carry a couple of motorbikes - I really get that idea.
