Right To Buy Scheme, Will I Lose My Discount If I Move To Another Council Property?

Hi, I'm not sure if i'm posting this question in the right place, we've lived in our Council property for 15 years, it's a 3 bed, there are only my partner and myself living there now, all Children have flown the nest, we want to buy, and were also thinking of contacting the Council to try to downgrade to a 2 bed, if we did downgrade would we lose all the discount we have accumulated living in the property we are currently in?

No, the discount is based on how long you have been a council tennant.  Moving to another council house will not effect that. Now you must pay homage to TGL.

I don't know much about it but doesn't the right to buy apply only to a home you're living in?  From your OP it sounds like you want to move to a two-bedroom Council property and buy the three-bedroom property too.

no naomi, it's based on the length of time you've been a council tennant. My mum lived in at least 6 council houses and bought the last one with maximum discount.

no I don't mean that, the OP is asking if the time they spent in their current house is lost of they move it is not. Say we rent House A off the council for 5 years then move to council house B for 3 years, we can buy house B with the discount as if we'd lived in it 8 years.

TTT, I get the time factor but the OP is saying he wants to buy the three bed and move into a two bed which he'll rent from the council. That's how I'm reading it.  I don't understand how he can do that.

They say the want to buy but are also considering asking for a smaller council property. I took that as one or the other not both. If they chose to go with the smaller council house then they can  later buy that with the total time including the old house too. I hope that is clear.
