huge protuding indicator lenses on vans

noticed that medium sized van based vehicles ( eg transit minibus) have huge protuding indicator lenses on front wings - why is this - is it a statutory regulation ?

I think it is to satisfy the requirement to have indicators visible from the side as well as the front.

yes , but all vehicles have indicators on the side- but they do not protrude so conspicously
