driving lessons

is there a legal requirement for the number of driving lessons a person must take before they can apply for a driving test?

There never use to be.

What about the people who get taught by family members. How will they ever know for sure how many lessons had been taken?

i did find it strange when i was told by a friend that he would have to take a certain number of driving lessons before he could be put in for his test, he was told this by a driving instructor, sounds to me like the driving instructor is just after a bit of cash...

i think there should be but their isn't as long as you've passed your theory you can put in for your test

I'm not sure though. My cousin passed his test a couple of years ago, he could already drive, but he went for his test because he had been told that they were bringing in a 'minimum' amount of lessons.

I suppose if they do that then out goes with family members teaching you....might not be a bad thing.

No, I did my driving test last year (and passed yay!), you aren't required to have a certain amount of lessons. Just as mcfluff says you need to pass your theory test first.

I think they are looking at bringing in a requirement for a number of lessons and having to drive in all seasons at some point in the future which I think would be beneficial as I struggled in the ice and snow last month!

No amount of driving lessons would teach some people. My friend had a lesson every week for 2 years and still couldn't drive. The instructor told her to throw the towel in...

the end of driving lessons from family members wouldn't be a bad thing, who is to say they wont pass on their bad habits to you when they are "teaching" you.

Quite Craftypig.In France, it's the law that learner drivers are accompanied by a qualified driving instructor only. The French also have compulsory probationer plates,like the voluntary P plates you see here, for drivers who have recently passed the test.

I think if you are taught by a family member any bad habits picked up would cause you to fail your driving test unless rectified by a driving instructor afterwards.

I live in Northern Ireland and we have to put 'R' plates up for a year after you have passed your test and you are restricted to 45mph

Ummm - did you know that they had to alter the driving lesson/test run in Northampton ?

There were too many catholics failing.............and all for the same reason.

Taking their hand off the steering wheel to cross themselves when passing the Cathedral on the Barrack Road !!
